Hawkinsville is the county seat of Pulaski, Georgia. It is situated about 89.4 miles from Columbus and 114.4 miles from Atlanta. It covers a total area of 4.4 square miles, wherein 1.57% of it is water.
Hawkinsville has the moniker 'City of Thirteen Highways', and was named after Benjamin Hawkins, a Revolutionary War soldier and a US Senator from Carolina. It is also known as the 'Harness Horse Capitol of Georgia'. The city owns a facility and training ground for horses during winter months, such as the Lawrence Bennett Harness Horse Racing.
It also celebrates the Harness Festival in April annually.
According to the 2000 census, there were 3,280 people, 1,360 households and 867 families in the city. The population was made up of Caucasians, African- Americans, Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders and Latinos. There were Catholics, Protestants and adherents to an eastern faith.
The city had a per capita income of $16,670 in 2000. Only 20.6% lived below the poverty line. The city had $96,400 as an average home cost. Majority of the housing units were located in the urban areas.
Hawkinsville is a member of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs' Better Hometown Program, which is a community development programme that aims to revitalize small communities with populations between 1,000 and 5,000. Hawkinsville is provided with technical assistance and fiscal resources for revitalization.

Hawkinsville experiences summer and winter seasons. In a year, it experiences an average of 221 sunny days and 95 rainy days. July is the warmest month and January is the coldest and wettest month.
