The city of Matlock is located in Sioux County, Iowa. Its exact geographic location is 43?14'35" North latitude and 95?56'4" West longitude. The city has a total area of 1.0 km2, all of which is land surface. Matlock has an elevation of 388 metres. It belongs in the Central Time Zone, which during standard time is six hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-6) or Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-6). During Daylight Saving Time (DST), the city's standard time becomes only five hours behind GMT (GMT-7 or UTC-7). Matlock has a zip code of 51244 and an area code of 712.

It was incorporated on 5 July 1897.

As of the 2007 census conducted by the United States Census Bureau, Matlock had a population of 82 and a population density of 85 heads per square kilometre. The population had decreased by 1.2% since the year 2000. Of the 82 residents, 42 (51.8%) were males and 40 (48.2%) were females. The population's racial composition was 97.6% non-Hispanic Caucasian and 2.4% Native American. In terms of ancestry, 43.4% of the residents were Dutch, 32.5% were Germans, 16.9% were US Americans, 10.8% were Irish, 4.8% were Norwegian; and another 4.8% were Russian. The city's median age of 36.8 years was approximately the same as that of Iowa's (36.6 years).

Of Matlock's residents who were 25 years of age and above, 87.3% finished high school or higher; 7.3% had a bachelor's degree or higher, 7.3% had professional or graduate degrees, and none were unemployed. The average travel time to work was 13.4 minutes. Of the city's residents who were 15 years and above at the time, 17.7% had never married; 79.0% were married; 3.2% were divorced; and none were separated or widowed.

The average size of a household in Matlock in 2007 was 2.5, which equalled that of Iowa. Of the households, 78.8% were occupied by families. This was much higher than the state percentage of 67.0%. Unmarried partners occupied 3.0% of the city's households. This percentage was lower than that of the state (4.9%). Also, there were no households which were occupied by gay or lesbian partners. The city had a higher percentage of residents (11.1%) whose incomes were below the poverty level compared to the state (9.1%).

The Catholic Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America had membership of 8% and 6% of the population, respectively. The remaining 19% of all the residents were affiliated with other religions, such as the United Methodist Church, the Lutheran Church, the Presbyterian Church (USA), and many others.
